⦁ The scientist and astronomer gives a lecture at the Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria en Ingeniería y Tecnologías Avanzadas of the IPN
⦁ Scientific teams work better with different points of view, he explained to students, professors and polytechnic authorities
"We women have shown that we are not less, and we can contribute a lot to science; there are women with Nobel Prizes and, therefore, we must change the paradigm, enjoy what we do and take on difficult challenges in life to be happy," said scientist Julieta Fierro Gossman, when giving the lecture "The condition of women in science".
In the framework of the Semana de la Investigación de la Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria en Ingeniería y Tecnologías Avanzadas (Upiita) of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), she highlighted the importance of facilitating the performance of women scientists with childcare and better working conditions, to strengthen science in our country.
Before students, teachers, professors, and researchers of Upiita, the professor and researcher of the Instituto de Astronomía de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) said:
"If we want women in science, we have to make it easy for them. Scientific teams work better when there are different points of view."
She reiterated that humanity as a species cannot continue to plunder the planet by exhausting its natural resources. She said that the opportunity offered by science is innovation to transform industry. The challenge is to link scientists with the industrial sector, she added.
Fierro Gossman said that the strength of science lies in constant evaluation. It is valid to make mistakes to advance, she said. She defined herself as passionate about
the Universe, where space, time, matter, and energy are concentrated. Despite the advances in astronomy, she added, human beings are ignorant about the cosmos.
The director of Upiita, Ramón Herrera Ávila, presented an award to Julieta Fierro for being an inspiration and example for Mexican women and for sharing her knowledge and experiences with young polytechnic students.
Addressing the polytechnic students, he said: "We want to see people like Dr. Julieta Fierro in all of you, so that you learn and know how to transmit that joy and passion for science".
At the conclusion of the event, the UPIITA community sang a Huelum! dedicated to the scientist for inspiring women and being an example of life.
