AI Robots Will Assist in Risky Activities: Director of the Center for Computing Research

• Juan Humberto Sossa Azuela assures that there is no need for concern, as robots programmed with Artificial Intelligence (AI) will primarily make everyday life easier by performing household, tedious, and repetitive tasks

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has marked a milestone in the advancement of computer sciences, as it has become an essential part of daily life through mobile devices, appliances, and various applications that make life easier, stated Dr. Juan Humberto Sossa Azuela, Director of the Center for Computing Research (CIC) at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN).

The Polytechnic professor and researcher, drawing on his extensive experience in this field, predicted that in the coming years, AI-programmed robots will be developed to assist humans by performing household chores or tedious and repetitive tasks that could pose a risk to their safety.

The Emeritus Researcher of the National System of Researchers (SNII) emphasized that humans should not worry about machines completely replacing people, as in the coming decades—or even centuries—it is unlikely that robots will be capable of self-programming, experiencing emotions, or, least of all, acquiring consciousness.

Sossa Azuela, also a member of the Robotics and Mechatronics Laboratory at CIC, highlighted that the Polytechnic has developed engineering programs and graduate courses in computer sciences with high social relevance. Recently, the institute introduced Master’s and Doctorate programs in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, aimed at training technologists capable of creating practical solutions to real-world problems.

"In these new graduate programs, students will not graduate with the traditional journal article but rather with a utility model or patent application, or a highly developed prototype that functions in laboratory or field conditions," he explained.

Sossa Azuela stressed that the country needs both scientists dedicated to fundamental sciences and technologists who can address societal challenges. This dual approach is essential to ensure proper development and provide a good quality of life for its inhabitants.

He added that the Politécnico is already working on creating cutting-edge graduate programs to train professionals capable of developing proprietary technology in the medium and long term. This will enable the design of numerous scientific and technological advancements for Mexico and the world.

He also noted that the academic programs in computer sciences offered by the IPN, particularly at the CIC, align with current demands to train professionals who will have greater opportunities to enter the national and international job market.
