The advent of large language models (LLM), powered by artificial neural networks of deep learning, has challenged the historical paradigm of data search and retrieval systems, stated researcher Marc Najork from Google DeepMind during the 10th International Conference on Information Management and Big Data (SIMBig) 2023.
In his master class "Evolution of Retrieval Systems," he highlighted that these systems reduce mental cost and the time required to obtain needed answers, addressing information needs more directly than traditional systems.
During the academic event organized by the Centro de Investigación en Computación (CIC), Najork pointed out that the emergence of these generative retrieval systems poses other challenges, including attributing responses to primary sources, providing nuanced answers, and the risk of users becoming overly confident in subsystems rather than conducting their own research.
Over three days, the 10th International Conference on Information Management and Big Data (SIMBig) 2023 addressed topics such as artificial intelligence, machine and deep learning, healthcare, natural language processing, software engineering, and semantic web through seven keynote lectures delivered by internationally renowned specialists, along with 26 papers and a panel on diversity and inclusion.
Some of the speakers included Huan Liu from Arizona State University, Yan Liu from the University of Southern California, Mona Diab from Carnegie Mellon University, Stefano Ermon from Stanford University, as well as scientists Wen Yu and Siaoou Li from the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados (Cinvestav) of the Politécnico.
The opening session, led by the acting director of CIC, Francisco Hiram Calvo Castro, featured scientists Juan Antonio Lossio Ventura from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, United States, and Eduardo Suárez Díaz, a professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.
