The Secretary of Public Education, Leticia Ramírez Amaya, honored the most outstanding students, professors, and researchers with the "Lázaro Cárdenas" 2023 award, the highest recognition from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN). She also conferred honorary doctorates to science communicator Julieta Fierro Gossman and businessman-philanthropist Alfredo Harp Helú, acknowledging their contributions and commitment to fostering public education of excellence.
Joined by the General Director of the IPN, Arturo Reyes Sandoval, the SEP head acknowledged that the Politécnico is part of the legacy of General Lázaro Cárdenas. This legacy inspires the Mexican government's Fourth Transformation to work for the well-being of all citizens, with special attention to those in need.
Ramírez emphasized that the "Lázaro Cárdenas" award symbolizes the commitment, vision, values, and ethics of those working towards an inclusive Mexico. She highlighted the importance of a public morality resistant to profit and ambitions, prioritizing the well-being of the population—a political ideal shared by General Cárdenas and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Addressing the audience in the Iberoamerican Hall of the historic building of the SEP, located in Mexico City's Historic Center, Leticia Ramírez stated, "We work to serve others, to build a welfare state, a free, democratic, and sovereign country. The educational excellence and research carried out by the IPN are increasingly recognized beyond our borders. Mexican society and many societies around the world value it, and we benefit from its contributions."
Arturo Reyes Sandoval, the Director of the IPN, stated that Polytechnic's role has been to modernize the country. He highlighted the institution's commitment to building bridges for science and technology to reach society, the environment, government, and the productive sector.
He provided details that the institution currently has 200,000 students, covering over 70% of the country. Reyes Sandoval asserted that the IPN is one of the three main public higher education institutions with the highest number of researchers, with 23 of them recognized as Emeritus by the National Researchers System (SNI).
Addressing the awardees, former directors-general, and members of the General Advisory Council, Reyes Sandoval emphasized that the Politécnico sets an example for achieving scientific and technological proficiency and training the best talents nationally and internationally.
He mentioned specific initiatives undertaken by the IPN, such as the construction of the Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria de Ingeniería Campus Palenque (UPIIP) to address the needs of the Tren Maya, the consolidation of the academic project of the Centro de Estudios Científicos y Tecnológicos (CECyT) 19 "Leona Vicario" to meet the requirements of the "Felipe Ángeles" International Airport, and 12 scientific and technological research projects with a budget of 1.2 million pesos to strengthen the Interoceanic Corridor.
Reyes Sandoval affirmed that the research conducted at the Politécnico represents one of Mexico's greatest strengths. He highlighted the creation of the National Laboratory of Vaccinology and Tropical Viruses (LNVyVT) and the postgraduate program in Vaccine Science and Technology, the first of its kind globally.
He also mentioned the ongoing creation of the Centro de Innovación e Integración de Tecnologías Avanzadas (CIITA) and a Centro de Estudios Científicos y Tecnológicos (CECyT) in Puebla.
Additionally, he emphasized the creation of the Meteorology Engineering Program and the success of the IPN's internationalization efforts, contributing to the scientific and technical growth of Mexico.
IPN Ratifies Commitment with the Mexican Government
Reyes Sandoval mentioned that in order to achieve the Fourth Transformation of Mexico, there is a deep commitment to bring the IPN to a position of stronger collaboration and support with the Federal Government. "Heading towards the centenary of the great educational celebration that is the Polytechnic, let us continue to strengthen the work of the IPN as a technological arm in the great projects of the Mexican nation, by working for education that closes gender gaps and makes social justice effective."
Physicist and science communicator Julieta Norma Fierro Gossman expressed gratitude for the honorary doctorate and commended Leticia Ramírez for her efforts in favor of Mexico's education. She shared her confidence that the Polytechnic's students receiving the "Lázaro Cárdenas" award would contribute to building a better country for everyone.
The astronomer -who has won the affection of the polytechnic students with talks and conferences-, shared that the "Poli" has always been in her heart and that her father was a fan of the Polytechnic team, and that she has a special affection for Channel Eleven, because it was the first time she was invited to television.
The philanthropist and businessman, Alfredo Harp Helú, highlighted the work of the Multidisciplinary Brigades of Community Social Service of the IPN, which serve the most needy communities and, therefore, he said, is proud to receive this honorary doctorate from an institution of such prestige. "The Politecnico has an enormous capacity to serve Mexico, because it is all over the Republic. I love the IPN and everything it does, which is why I am the most Polytechnic university student there is!".
Special guests at the ceremony included the Secretary of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation of Mexico City, Ofelia Angulo Guerrero, and the Executive Secretary of the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES), Luis Armando González Placencia.
