To maintain the updating and feedback of knowledge, as well as to encourage students' interest in research, the Escuela Superior de Medicina (ESM) initiated a series of monthly actions to disseminate and promote science with the presentation of the book "Antioxidants and Chronic Degenerative Diseases."
The two-volume work was edited in 2009 with the collaboration of 56 academics from 17 educational and healthcare institutions, including the Instituto Politécnico Nacional. The contributors consolidate conceptual foundations and scientific information in a single document, enabling students and researchers to understand the subject better.
The book consists of 37 chapters organized into six sections covering topics related to the chemistry of free radicals, antioxidant defenses, cell damage by free radicals, free radicals in diseases, aging and disease, and therapy: a role for antioxidants.
ESM professor and researcher José Antonio Morales González, a co-author of the text, emphasized the importance of disseminating the work. Despite the evolution of knowledge about antioxidants in the last 14 years, the content remains relevant and serves as a valuable reference.
When discussing the book, ESM professors and researchers Claudia Camelia Calzada Mendoza, Elvia Mera Jiménez, Marvin Antonio Soriano Ursúa, and Jazmín García Machorro agreed that the interdisciplinary-organized information is a valuable resource for researchers, students, and health professionals. It clearly and precisely expands the panorama of antioxidants and provides the foundations for understanding their role in physiological and pathological processes.
They emphasized that oxidative stress is present in virtually all chronic degenerative diseases. Therefore, the work addresses its effects to contribute to the treatment of conditions such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, renal pathologies, and neurodegenerative diseases. Hence, there is a proposal to review the volume to enrich it and produce a second edition under the editorial seal of the IPN.
