L'Oréal and UNESCO recognize Rosa de Guadalupe Gonzalez Huerta for her career in science

For her contributions to science and research, L'Oréal Mexico, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Mexican Academy of Sciences (AMC) and the Mexican Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO (Conalmex) awarded the Prize for Women in Science, in the category of Consolidated Trajectories, to Dr. Rosa de Guadalupe González Huerta, a researcher at the School of Chemical Engineering and Extractive Industries (ESIQIE) of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN).

This category was established in 2021 and aims to recognize the work of three Mexican women scientists from Mexican educational institutions in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), their career as consolidated researchers, their contributions in their field of study, as well as to empower the role of women scientists in society.

Eighty female experts from different universities in the country participated and were evaluated for their academic trajectory and their contributions in the environmental, social and economic areas.

Currently, only 22 percent of Mexican women are in the energy area, mainly in technological development with hydrogen.

Dr. Gonzalez Huerta said that this recognition motivates her to work on her line of research, focused on energy generation and technological development through hydrogen (H), a project that began in 2011 with seed capital from the Energy Network.

His interest in science allowed him to develop the project "IPN, solar-hydrogen sustainable housing", which has the trademark title 1564655 and patent number 368795, which integrates renewable energy storage systems with hydrogen and electricity.

The technology of this house can be applied in isolated communities that lack electricity services and for contingencies or natural disasters caused by man. "As a person and researcher, I am encouraged to have won the award. Thanks to the support I received, my line of hydrogen research will be consolidated at the Polytechnic and nationally. We women have shown that we can grow in this field, which is practically dominated by men," said the scientist.

Since January of this year, the professor belongs to the National System of Researchers (SNI), level III. During her time at the IPN, she has published several articles in indexed journals, has contributed to the training of postgraduate graduates, has been a bibliographic reference and has been cited in texts in her specialty, among other achievements.

For 15 years he has been part of the academic staff of the ESIQIE, where he has focused his research in the energy area, mainly in the development of hydrogen technologies, electrocatalysis for PEM and alkaline electrolyzers; in the creation of alkaline reactors for dual hydrogen-fossil fuel combustion and hydrocarbon enrichment.

Dr. González Huerta participates with a multidisciplinary group of national experts in the development of a lithium road map, to analyze the real scope of the metal for the year 2024, and its prospects for 2030 and 2050.

The project is part of the "Decree creating the decentralized public agency called Lithium for Mexico", promoted by the Government of Mexico.

In 2014 she founded the Hydrogen Thematic Network, belonging to the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt), an organization that invited her to participate in the project for lithium extraction for raw material; conversion of the mineral; batteries; storage systems, and support of the same to accumulate electric energy.

Among its plans are the development of micro-grids (with hydrogen) in small communities in the states of Baja California and Baja California Sur; the implementation of electrolysis systems in the private sector, and the enrichment of natural gas with hydrogen to reduce the production of this hydrocarbon.
