IPN to contribute aeronautics and sustainable energy capabilities to support AIFA

The General Director of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), Arturo Reyes Sandoval, and the head of the "Felipe Ángeles" International Airport (AIFA), Isidoro Pastor Román, signed a general collaboration agreement, through which this university will contribute all its strength in aeronautics and its experience in the study of sustainable energy to strengthen the operation of this airport, an emblem of the Mexican Government.

At the AIFA facilities and accompanied by his collaborators, Reyes Sandoval stated: "With the support of a great historical legacy we can affirm that our beloved Instituto Politécnico Nacional has been one of the builders of Mexico's aerospace sector and, once again, we add our capabilities and strengths to all the actions that promote the country's economic development".

"For seven decades, the Politécnico was the only institution in the country that offered aeronautical engineering to meet the air transportation administration, operation, and management needs to be derived from the boost in tourism that has been given to our country."

He informed that currently, 4,323 polytechnics are trained in the aeronautical sector, which will strengthen this area that is projected as a national and global trend of high growth.

Reyes Sandoval emphasized that the Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria de Energía y Movilidad (Upiiem) trains the professionals of the future in the fields of sustainable energy and mobility, areas that will be able to contribute favorably to AIFA's operations.

He commented that, as a result of collaborative work with universities, research centers, and institutes throughout the country, the IPN developed the experimental microsatellite Satmex, with funding from the Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (IFT) of the Secretaría Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes (SICT).

He affirmed that with the launching of the Mexican Space Agency (on April 30, 2012), the Politécnico has strengthened the Centro de Desarrollo Aeroespacial (CDA). "Today we are mindful that we must continue to generate human capital of the highest specialization and quality for the sector, but we must also contribute to innovation that is not only regional but national and international in scope."

He highlighted that IPN scientists and students collaborated with an interdisciplinary group for the development and integration of a standardized platform to participate in a mission, with the contribution of the EMIDSS3 suborbital module, coordinated by NASA's Scientific Balloon Program. "There are currently 20 aerospace research projects and eight academic cooperation agreements."

He explained that the IPN signed a collaboration agreement with the South Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) to strengthen cooperation in aerospace matters between Mexico and the Asian nation.

The General Director of AIFA, Isidoro Pastor Román, indicated that this agreement will strengthen the link with the young people so that they will have the opportunity to carry out professional internships and social service and participate in the airport's labor exchange.

He stated that AIFA will be part of an organizational structure called Aeroportuario, Ferroviario y de Servicios Auxiliares (Airport, Railroad and Auxiliary Services), which will join other productive projects that the President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has initiated in the Mexican Southeast.

"We are fortunate to have Politécnico colleagues from different careers; the airport structure has accountants, graduates in international trade and commercial relations, as well as aeronautical engineers, construction engineers, computer engineers, and communications and electronics engineers."

As part of his visit to AIFA, Reyes Sandoval chaired a meeting with the IPN's Committee for Internationalization, where he assured that the Institute is working on the projection of the Institute in global knowledge platforms, which will allow it to reach international academic standards, generate strategic alliances and promote initiatives of high social impact, reinforced by the strengthening of the polytechnic identity.

The coordinator of Proyectos Estratégicos, María del Carmen Villegas Hernández, presented the progress of internationalization projects by type of activity: academic, cultural activities, administrative process, links with companies, agreements, research projects, and academic mobility, among others.
