The ash expelled by the Popocatépetl volcano is abrasive, so the population is recommended to use face masks and protect their eyes with goggles, stated Julie Roberge, a researcher from the Escuela Superior de Ingeniería y Arquitectura (ESIA) at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN).
The doctor, whose field of study focuses on volcanic activity, particularly the Popocatépetl volcano, explained that the ash it emits is composed of pulverized rock, volcanic glass, and small minerals, so prolonged contact with this material should be avoided.
She advises the population in the municipalities and localities near the volcano to close doors and windows, as well as to minimize exposure to this material, especially for children, the elderly, and to protect all kinds of animals.
She explained that the activity observed at the Popocatépetl volcano is a normal occurrence, as it is located in the Neovolcanic Axis and is likely due to the presence of new magma at great depths. Therefore, the population should not be alarmed. She recommended following the instructions of the National Civil Protection Coordination and the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred).
Volcanic activity is unpredictable, she emphasized, as it depends on the amount of material accumulated beneath the volcano. It is also not possible to accurately determine the populations that may be most affected by ash emissions, as it will depend on factors such as wind patterns, among others.
