"We are at a stage of transformation in the field of energy. Mexico requires technologists that will allow the country to advance like the nations of Southeast Asia and become one of the world leaders," said the General Director of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), Arturo Reyes Sandoval, when commemorating the Third Anniversary of the Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria de Energía y Movilidad (UPIEM).
An example of this transformation is South Korea, a country that 50 years ago was poor and now has trained technologists, who have contributed innovations and technology to take that nation forward and position it on the international stage, explained the head of the Politécnico to the students, teachers, support staff and directors of the UPIEM.
In the auditorium of the "Adolfo Ruiz Cortines" building, Reyes Sandoval pointed out that the academic offerings of the UPIEM - with the Engineering Degrees in Energy Systems and Smart Grids, Sustainable Energy Business, Energy, and Urban Mobility - respond to the Sustainable Development Goals to transform cities and communities.
The Politécnico is a leader in the development of science, technology, and innovation to strengthen the Mexican energy industry and lead the country towards its transition in this area, under the principle of resource sovereignty, a legacy of the founder of the IPN, President Lázaro Cárdenas, he said.
"It fills us with great enthusiasm to have students who have shown in a short time that great commitment that a IPN student must have: an innovative attitude and resilience; they are politécnicos capable of transforming challenges into opportunities to grow and advance," he stressed.
Reyes Sandoval stated that UPIEM is celebrating today by showing the results it has obtained in only three years, through the Expo Industrial Fair 2022, in which prototypes, research, business models, and projects were exhibited for three days.
"I am sure that beyond our borders, the 900 students of the UPIEM, shortly will undertake and innovate in the areas of their training, to put high the motto of our house of studies: La Técnica al Servicio de la Patria", concluded the General Director of the IPN.
The Academic Secretary of the IPN, Mauricio Igor Jasso Zaranda, explained that beyond being a strategic sector, the issues of energy, mobility, and intelligent networks have become a necessity for our society, agglomerated in the metropolitan area of Mexico City, where mobility is a fundamental issue for the optimal coexistence of people.
He highlighted the commitment of the IPN authorities to strengthen the UPIEM and reinforce the training of its students while congratulating the community of this academic unit for this anniversary event.
The director of the UPIEM, Néstor Lorenzo Díaz Ramírez, commented that this academic unit trains professionals who will provide integrated solutions to the problems facing our country. He thanked the students who, despite the confinement, have moved forward in their education, with the firm support of the Institute's authorities.
Among the activities of the Expo Industrial Fair, 2022 was the participation of the former General Director of the IPN, Raúl Talán Ramírez, a specialist in energy efficiency. In addition, an immersive experience was offered by the CISA group with the exhibition of an electric bus (which is part of the Mexico City Metrobus System).
Attendees also enjoyed the Formula UPIEM (the first race of remote-controlled electric vehicles designed and assembled by the students of this unit), as well as the electric car developed by Dr. Gerardo Contreras Puente, a specialist from the School of Physics and Mathematics (ESFM).
