The Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria en Ingeniería y Tecnologías Avanzadas (UPIITA) of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) held the 1st Aerospace Colloquium, where experts from educational institutions such as the Politécnico, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), the TInstituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Occidente (ITESO), as well as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), shared their experiences regarding the significance of this industry in the development of nations.
During the opening declaration of the event, the director of UPIITA, Ramón Herrera Ávila, emphasized that the Politécnico educates specialized human resources in the field, equipped with the necessary tools for the development, innovation, and maintenance of aircraft as well as spacecraft, which are indispensable elements for the growth of this sector on a global scale.
In turn, Jesús Irán Grajeda Arellano, in charge of the direction of the Aerospace Development Center (CDA) of the Institute, stated that this educational institution promotes the generation of knowledge among teachers and students, supporting the creation of aerospace projects and technology that can be validated in space.
During his presentation titled "NASA Scientific Balloon Program: Science and Space Technology at Hand," Hugo Franco, Operations Manager of the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facilities-NASA-Peraton Program, explained its functioning.
Additionally, Dr. Mario Alberto Mendoza Bárcenas, a researcher at CDA and leader of the EMIDSS-4 project (Experimental Module for the Iterative Design for Satellite Subsystems version 4), discussed the Institute's initial missions with NASA through the Scientific Balloon Program of the U.S. space agency.
He pointed out that from the outset, EMIDSS was conceived as a technological platform designed with commercial electronic components for the validation of temperature, humidity, and pressure under space conditions, which, in the first three missions, complied with strict international NASA standards.
