With the Recommender System for the Assignment of Thesis Reviewers, which automatically suggests the most suitable examiners and advisors for final year projects, students Hannah Gu and José Manuel Suárez Bautista from the School of Computing (Escom) represented the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) at the 9th International Symposium on Language & Knowledge Engineering (LKE) 2024, held in Dublin, Ireland.
Through Natural Language Processing, the students developed a metric using mathematical equations to establish a high degree of similarity between thesis topics and the characteristics of each Escom professor. This meticulous task was carried out in two phases.
The first phase involved the collection and digitization of terminal projects in PDF format from 2014 to 2023, which were previously stored on compact discs. In the second phase, they built comprehensive profiles of the professors, including academic background, fields of interest, courses taught, research conducted, and theses supervised or evaluated.
“The idea to create this tool arose from the incorporation of two new degree programs at Escom and the consequent increase in terminal projects at the end of each semester, which is a very demanding task for the academic staff responsible for assigning thesis advisors and examiners,” explained Manuel Suárez.
He added that they utilized other software engineering tools behind the system, such as database storage, text processing, deep learning, and a Python module called Sentence Transformer, which allows for the calculation of similarity scores between the entered data.
9th International Symposium on Language & Knowledge Engineering
Due to the project's potential for use not only at Escom but also at other schools and even at international educational institutions, advisors Consuelo Varinia García Mendoza and Omar Juárez Gambino invited the students to participate in the 9th International Symposium on Language & Knowledge Engineering (LKE) 2024, organized by the Technological University of Dublin.
Their technological development article was accepted at this international event to be presented to a specialized audience in the category: Academic Information Processing, under the section Academic Search/Recommendation Systems. It will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Scientometric Research (JSR) (indexed in Scopus, with a citation of 1.7 and ESCI, with an impact of 0.8).
The IPN article was endorsed by the Scientific Committee for its originality, technical content, and relevance. The final acceptance was based on a double-blind peer review of the complete article, and the decision was made to present it orally.
“The participation in the symposium was very enriching. We met many colleagues who shared their experiences with us, and we shared ours. Knowing that this work is at the level of the best in the world gives us a sense of achievement, recognition, and confirmation that we are doing things right at the Politécnico,” emphasized Hannah.
