Program / Surgeon Midwife

Objective

  • To contribute to the fulfillment of the fundamental objectives of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, through the academic training of medical professionals, by the graduate profile determined by the current health problems and their future trends; the national socioeconomic, and demographic characteristics and the scientific-technological development with impact on medicine.
  • To train general practitioners with an optimal level of professional qualification, with multiple alternatives of medical practice and sufficiently competitive in the multiple alternatives of medical practice and sufficiently competitive in the national and international spheres; and, above all, with a broad commitment of solidarity and service with the Mexican population, with an adequate potential for leadership and linkage in the institutions of the national health system.
  • Consolidate and increase the academic prestige, the institutional image, and a preeminent place in the context of medical education institutions, based on the quality, ethics, and social and professional contributions of its graduates.
  • To contribute, based on the fulfillment of the above objectives, to raise the level of health and quality of life of Mexicans; as well as to the development and scientific and technological independence of Mexico.

Candidate's Profile

To improve the feasibility in the optimal achievement of the proposed graduate profile, as well as more appropriate conditions to raise the terminal efficiency rates, applicants to study medicine at the ESM, CICS Unidad Milpa Alta or ENMyH of the IPN, preferably cover the following profile:

  • Have completed their high school studies, preferably in the IPN's Centro de Estudios Científicos y Tecnológicos (vocacionales) in the area of medical-biological sciences, with a minimum overall average of 8; or failing that, meet similar conditions for students from educational institutions of recognized academic solvency.
  • To present and obtain a diagnosis of aptitude in the general health examination conducted by the Dirección de Servicio Social y Prestaciones of the IPN.
  • Pass the psychological, psychometric, and vocational orientation exam.
  • Manifest a notable disposition for learning, which will set him/her apart from dogmatic attitudes towards knowledge.
  • Manifest a clear sense of willingness to serve and solidarity with others, and a sense of respect for life, health and illness.
  • Have full time available for the studies of the career.
  • Have a clear vocation for the career and have the necessary attitudes and aptitudes to practice the profession, such as: responsibility, seriousness, self-control, willingness to develop an affective response capacity to stressful, risky or emerging situations, tending to solve problems.
  • Possess solid knowledge in the areas of biology, physics, chemistry; and in an ideal way, basic knowledge of Greco-Latin etymologies and English language, which will facilitate the understanding and mastery of the concepts used in the basic and clinical subjects.
  • To know the fundamental elements of the handling and use of computers, as well as the current computer systems and data banks of medical and scientific information.

Graduate's profile

The student who completes the medical career and obtains the title of physician, surgeon, and midwife, is a graduate at the undergraduate level, academically endorsed by the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, and empowered for the free practice of medicine by the Secretaria de Educación Pública, through the issuance of professional degree and professional license. The curricular structure of the career is configured for the formation of a medical professional that gathers characteristics grouped in the following components of a dynamic and changing profile by its nature, as the social structure and the health situation of the country evolve:

ETHICAL AND SOCIAL ASPECTS OF BEING A PHYSICIAN

  • Recognizes and professes the philosophical-humanistic principles; medical morality; of adherence to legality; and Bioethics; which support and guide the professional practice of contemporary medicine, on the fundamental basis of immutable respect for human life under any condition.
  • He studies the human individual as a bio-psycho-social entity, so he tends to develop an integral conception of the health-disease process, considering the diagnosis and treatment, the biological, psychological, and social spheres of his patients.
  • Possesses the necessary and sufficient knowledge in socio-medical disciplines to understand and interpret the social and environmental factors that influence the state of health of individuals and communities; knows and analyzes the Mexican pathology, congenital and acquired, which is most frequently present in the Mexican population, and can therefore participate in priority health and medical care programs, within the framework of the current official regulations on the subject.
  • Has a clear concept of the equivalent importance between the preventive and curative function in his medical practice, both in the daily individual treatment of each of his patients, as well as in his intervention in public health problems, adopting as a principle the pertinent preventive actions or recommendations in every one of his medical acts.
  • Assumes responsibility for the integral management of the patient's health situation when it is entrusted to him/her, with humane, respectful, and dignified treatment, trying to achieve the balance and physical and psychological harmony required by the patient to integrate properly into society.
  • Considers the emotional and cultural characteristics of the population of the area where he/she provides services; respects the manifestations that derive from these factors and determine the personal and family behavior of the individual facing the disease and modulates the level of acceptance of preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic measures; with the purpose to improve the doctor-patient relationship.
  • Recognizes and accepts the postulates and doctrinal recommendations on ethics of national and international organizations that study the relationship of medical sciences with models of academic training, scientific research, and deontological behavior.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS FOR THE PRACTICE OF GENERAL MEDICINE.

  • Possesses the necessary and sufficient knowledge in the basic scientific disciplines, for the understanding and correct interpretation of the morphological, biochemical and physiological characteristics and phenomena of the normal human individual, which will allow him/her to subsequently support the clinical explanation of the pathological processes; as well as about the substances, biotic agents and other external factors that alter the state of equilibrium of the organism.
  • Master the methodology to collect, organize, process, and record information from patients or their relatives to obtain presumptive clinical diagnoses; and integrate the main nosological syndromes concurrent in states of organ-functional insufficiencies, infectious-contagious conditions, traumatological injuries, metabolic alterations, and the most frequent chronic degenerative diseases in our country. It has the criteria to ratify or rectify diagnostic hypotheses according to the evolution of the condition and the body's response to the prescribed therapy.
  • Knows the indications, and knows how to analyze and clinically interpret the results of routine laboratory studies of clinical analysis and pathological anatomy; interprets radiographic studies of common use and knows the indications of other imaging procedures, to integrate the results and interpretation obtained in case management.
  • Knows the pharmacology, indications, contraindications, side effects, and posology and restrictions in the prescription of commonly used drugs and knows the indications of other imaging procedures, to integrate the results and interpretation obtained in case management.

  • Prescribes and applies the appropriate management of preventive, hygienic, nutritional, medicinal, therapeutic and, if necessary, rehabilitation, to maintain in optimal conditions the general condition of the healthy individual in the different phases that influence the state of health of the individual: growth and development, reproductive health, senescence.
  • Performs clinical diagnosis, medical, hygienic, and nutritional control of gestation, delivery prognosis, delivery care, as well as indications for care and control of puerperium.
  • Knows the physiopathology of the most common morphological and functional alterations of the female reproductive system, and the frequent pathology of pregnancy for its prevention, treatment, or referral to the second or third level of care.
  • Applies the measures of immediate care and prevention of diseases in the newborn, prescription of breastfeeding, milk formulas, and subsequent nutrition. Knows the national immunization schedule. Performs prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of common childhood diseases.
  • Knows the processes of character and personality development; the psychological profile of the individual in its different phases of age and sex to identify, preventing for specialized care, the main alterations in the psychic sphere of health. Recognizes the importance of management.
  • Has the necessary information to advise the individual and the family nucleus on sexuality, sexual development, and hygiene; prevention of diseases through sexual contact, prevention of pregnancy, and family planning.
  • Performs clinical diagnosis, preventive actions, and drug, etiological and symptomatological therapeutics in diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and ectoparasites of greater prevalence in the epidemiological panorama of the country.
  • Performs diagnosis, treatment, and control of diseases associated with medical specialties, but which are susceptible to management at the first level of care: Otorhinolaryngology, Urology, Ophthalmology, Gastroenterology, Pneumology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Allergology, Geriatrics, Dermatology, Hematology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Traumatology, and Orthopedics.
  • He has basic knowledge of surgical pathology for diagnosis and prognosis in cases of acute abdomen, he is part of the surgical team up to the grade of the first assistant in general and obstetric surgery. Knows and performs pre and post operative medical control. Performs outpatient surgery on the skin and superficial planes, wound suturing, and other common skills.
  • Knows the pharmacology, indications, administration techniques, and clinical effects of substances for general surgical anesthesia; as well as local anesthesia, analgesia of the ambulatory patient, and inhalation therapy of the bedridden patient.
  • Master the techniques of resuscitation, clinical registration and support of vital functions, fluid and electrolyte replacement, hemorrhage inhibition, articular reductions, and immobilizations, pain control, as well as the necessary therapeutic or surgical measures in pathological conditions that require emergency attention; to limit the damage, stabilize the general condition of the patient and channel him/her for definitive medical attention.
  • Knows the classification and epidemiology of the most frequent diseases and injuries caused by accidents in the work environment, as well as their casuistry, prevention strategies, and primary treatment.
  • Has sufficient information for the presumptive and, if necessary, differential diagnosis of mental illnesses for the referral of patients to specialized psychiatric facilities, and the concerted follow-up in the treatment and recovery process of the same.
  • Possesses the necessary legal-legal information related to medical practice, which empowers and regulates the issuance of medical opinions, death certificates, and others; as well as the prescription of medicines of normal and restricted distribution. Performs clinical assessment in states of intoxication by intoxicants, psychotropic substances, common poisons, and alcohol. Knows the medical-legal classification of injuries; and can to diagnose death, its probable cause, and approximate time of occurrence, through macroscopic evidence in an autopsy.

The Surgeon and Midwife graduated from the Escuela Superior de Medicina, CICS Unidad Milpa Alta or ENMyH will be able to develop professionally in the following fields:
