Objective

To train competent Dental professionals who contribute to promote, prevent, diagnose and rehabilitate in an integral way the oral health of the population with solid scientific, technological, and humanistic knowledge that will allow them to work in an interdisciplinary way in clinical, and epidemiological research, as well as in the planning and evaluation of health services with social responsibility, creativity, leadership, and respect for the environment.

Candidate's Profile

Applicants for the Bachelor's Degree in Dentistry should:

Graduate's profile

The graduates have received thorough training in all aspects of promoting, preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases that affect an individual's health status. They do this by creating programs that are tailored to the needs of the population and by utilizing cutting-edge scientific and technological techniques. They may therefore operate in the public, commercial, and research sectors in cross- and interdisciplinary work contexts while exercising responsibility, leadership, and high moral and ethical standards.

The Bachelor in Dentistry integrally applies basic and specific competencies to promote, prevent, diagnose, and treat oral and dental diseases, through the design of programs oriented to the needs of the population and by applying state-of-the-art scientific and technological methods. It works in an interdisciplinary manner with national and international standards using techniques, developing research, innovation, ethics, responsibility, leadership, and respect for the environment. At present, the trends of World Dentistry for the near future are being directed by the advances in science and modern technology. With an entrepreneurial attitude towards work and production, encouraging creativity, self-learning, a sense of responsibility, interdisciplinary practice, and continuous updating.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Provide preventive dental education to the community.
  • Detect the alterations of the stomatognathic apparatus.
  • Diagnose the alterations of the stomatognathic apparatus.
  • To provide primary care in cases of oral cavity emergencies.
  • Rehabilitate stomatological alterations through dental surgery, endodontics, exodontics, fixed, and removable partial prosthesis, total prosthodontics, orthodontics, and maxillofacial surgery, and maxillofacial surgery.
  • To be a professional with the basic scientific training to assess the state of health - disease of the individual, seen as a being.
  • To be a highly scientifically and technologically competitive professional.

  • Making the diagnosis in different clinical situations.
  • The elaboration of a treatment plan appropriate to individual needs.

  • The construction of the epidemiological profile of the population.
  • The selection and manipulation of dental materials for each particular clinical use.
  • The realization of preventive treatments.
  • Knowledge and handling of ionizing radiation and the application of safety measures.
  • The performance of intraoral radiographic techniques.
  • Interpretation of radiographic images.
  • The indication of extraoral radiographic techniques.
  • The prescription of drugs for the treatment of oral-dental pathologies according to scientific criteria of efficacy, safety, and patient characteristics. To recognize the mechanisms of production of adverse reactions and pharmacological interactions, and the means to prevent them.
  • The identification of lesions of the dental and periodontal tissues.
  • Administration of local anesthetics.
  • The realization of plastic and rigid restorations.
  • Knowledge and development of the surgical environment.
  • Performing exodontia on erupted teeth.
  • The identification of pathologies derived from the absence of teeth and the loss of their coronary structures and their resolution.
  • Knowledge of the surgical pathologies of the oral and maxillofacial region.
  • Knowledge of the techniques used in Bucco-Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology.
  • To be competent in the knowledge of the normative body that regulates the profession and to give it forensic significance.
  • Theoretical and practical competence in the endodontics of multi-radicular teeth.
  • To be competent in the evaluation of the results of root canal treatment.
  • Be competent to integrate into the health care team in health care services.
  • Be competent in comprehensive dental care according to the different levels of complexity of health services and dental care.
  • Complexity of health services and primary health care.
  • Use of the processes, methods, instruments, and equipment of dentistry.

Academic Requirements

At the upper secondary level, applicants for admission to the Dentistry program at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional must possess the fundamental knowledge and abilities that ensure appropriate performance at the higher level. Upper secondary level prerequisite knowledge and skills provide sufficient performance at the higher level to which they are applying for admission. By the IPN's philosophy and guiding principles, they must also possess the attitudes and values essential to take ownership of the training process and play a proactive role in the research and creation of the necessary projects and tasks.

Work Field

The Bachelor in Dentistry has the basic knowledge necessary to develop the integral practice of the profession: preventive, clinical, medical-dental integration, epidemiological, and for updating and continuing education; therefore, he/she can work in the health sector, private sector, public sector, and industrial sector, in addition to designing and executing clinical and community research projects. As well as teaching in the training of human resources in the same profession or at the level of associate professional.
