Pharmaceutical Engineering

Objective

This technology should be oriented to the solution of problems in the design and production of high quality drugs and a professional in Pharmaceutical Engineering must be able to perform team design, production planning, cost estimation, innovation in new products, process development and formulations of pharmaceutical forms.

Candidate’s Profile

The candidate for the degree of Pharmaceutical Engineering, should have the following characteristics:

    • Strong academic bases in the physical-mathematical or medical-biological areas.
    • English at a technical level
    • Basic fundamentals of social sciences and humanities.

    • Communicate correctly, orally and in writing.

Graduate´s profile

  • Knowledge

    • Proficiency in Physics-Mathematics and Chemistry-Biology.
    • Communications suitable for the development of Pharmaceutical Engineering and for the sustainable use of natural resources.
    • Engineering of production and recovery of biological products, with emphasis on purification processes of medicines for human use.
    • Border knowledge in emerging knowledge areas such as proteomics, genomics, nano-biotechnology and bioinformatics.
    • Social development, ethics, economics and administration suitable for the understanding of the socio-economic environment and for the development of self-employment capacity and the creation of technology-based companies.
    • Grammar, phonetics and syntax in Spanish and English.

Academic Requirements

Comply in a timely manner with each of the stages of the admission process highlighted in the call for entry to the high school System at IPN and show documents such as:

  • Official certificate of higher education.
  • Certificate of secondary education.
  • Single Population Registry Key (CURP).
  • Birth certificate.
  • Pass the entry examination.
  • 6 small size (4x4) photos.

Work Field

  • The labour market can be divided into three main sectors: public, private and research and development.
  • Within these three sectors, the most important for the Pharmaceutical Engineer is the private sector, taking into account the wide range of development possibilities in the multiple areas that exist in the sector, taking into account that most large pharmaceutical consortiums own production plants in our country.
  • This implies many activities, from the reception, analysis and control of raw material to the formulation, quality control and conditioning of final products. The coverage of these areas must necessarily include all the unit operations involved in the areas of production, recovery and purification of a drug, as well as the quality and performance control of each of the operations in the previous areas.
  • Similarly, the pharmaceutical engineers will have access to the areas of process validation, product and equipment involved in the different areas of a pharmaceutical company. It should be highlighted that the occupied positions in all designated areas of this sector range from specialized technicians to managerial level.
  • In the public sector, the labour market is more constrained, since only some state-owned companies maintain pharmaco-chemical production processes and therapeutic agents, for the social importance and health repercussions on Mexican population. However, the same guidelines described for the industrial sector are followed by these production plants.
  • Finally, in the research and development sector, the recruiting of pharmaceutical engineers, shows an almost unspoilt field, because in this sector, it is necessary to complement the knowledge with postgraduate studies. However, emerging fields in the area of research and development for the production of new drugs, the development of diagnostic reagents and new therapeutic systems based on genetic engineering and molecular biology make it extremely attractive since it is necessary to take into account that all these products have a production base and biotechnological control, which implies taking into account their eventual escalation.​
