Geophysical Engineering

Objective

To form professionals with principles Earth’s physics and mastery in the use of computing tools, geophysics instruments and knowledge in geology in order to apply geophysical methods.

Graduate´s profile

  • Explore, discover, analyse, and evaluate the basic and tactical natural resources for the energetic and economic sustenance in the country.
  • Study and leverage the mechanisms of the earth’s phenomena to mitigate natural disasters.
  • Explore, identify and analyse polluted areas in the environment.
  • Create an interdisciplinary link among geophysics engineering and some other engineering and science fields in order to achieve a natural resources rational use, to study and monitor the natural phenomena and to determine the properties and structure of the subsoil.
  • Have a strong forming in physics, mathematics and computing to empower the graduated to design numeric models of the earth’s physical body seeking for descriptions and predictions.
  • Master on currently known applied geophysics techniques and methods in order to either effectively reproduce and perform or generate new ones which improve the existing ones.
  • Have the necessary fundaments in geology to plan a work schema to collect geophysical data which create geologically readable mathematical models.
  • Know and understand fundaments, designs and construction of the equipment used in geophysics to correctly handle it and get reliable information.
  • Have the necessary computer fundaments during the geophysics data process and the necessary computing elements seeking for process and simulation.
  • Know about the different natural phenomena in our planet as well as the main methods to study and mitigate.
  • Create and administrate research, economics, finances, and productive control projects.
  • Know about the socio-economic situation in Mexico and in the world.
  • Know about the current scientific and technological impact.
  • Observe, analyse and synthesize to develop research methods.
  • Develop critical and creative learning to face and find solutions to no daily issues which are commonly found in the professional exercise of geophysics.

  • Be able to communicate and manage correctly in an oral and written way as well as read and write reports and technic summaries in Spanish and English indicating the tendencies and results of a project.

Academic Requirements

Comply in a timely manner with each of the stages of the admission process highlighted in the call for entry to the university system at IPN and show documents such as:

  • High school Certificate.
  • Secondary School Certificate.
  • Unique Code of Population Registration (CURP).
  • Birth certificate.
  • Pass the entry examination.
  • 6 credential photographs.

Work Field

  • Explore different natural resources such as petroleum, minerals and water.
  • Explore geothermic deposits to geothermic plants to generate electricity.
  • Study soil mechanical properties necessary to create great civil works.
  • Explore suitable areas to locate sanitary landfills.
  • Explore underground areas polluted with industrial waste.
  • Explore elements and archaeological relics.
  • Belonging to the research fields in natural resources phenomena such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes and landslides.
  • Enter research fields on Earth’s evolution.
  • From the above information, it can be clearly seen that Geophysics’ demand has broadened to different fields of application in engineering and Earth’s science. Traditionally, Geophysical Engineering demand targeted companies focusing on natural resources, minerals and water exploration.
  • So far, this tendency has not changed and will not in the future. In addition, it is important for companies, organisations and research institutions to cover the social needs previously mentioned.
  • Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) has implemented an extensive exploration programme in the Gulf of Mexico and this will mean a source of employment for future IPN graduates.
  • Some other companies exploring petroleum such as Companía Mexicana de Exploraciones (COMESA), Companía Mexicana de Geofísica (CMG), Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo (IMP), CoreLab, Schlumberger, Halliburton and LandMark are also hiring professionals in Geophysics. In addition, in Mexico, companies exploring mineral resources such as Consejo de Recursos Minerales (COREMI) can be considered as sources of employment.
  • The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) is another source of employment as it is in charge of geothermic deposits exploration programmes.
  • The Comisión Nacional del Agua (CNA) is the one in charge of the exploration and rational water consumption in Mexico.
  • Government programmes focused on mitigating natural risks are a different way to create employment opportunities in different institutions focused on the study of natural phenomena and the evolution of our planet. Postgraduate studies are required in order to work in institutions such as Instituto de Geofísica and Centro de Investigación Científica y de Estudios Superiores de Ensenada (CICESE), Instituto de Ingeniería, Fundación Javier Barros Sierra y el Centro Nacional de Prevención de Desastres (CENAPRED), Universidad de Colima and Universidad de Jalisco. Sometimes, these institutions offer the opportunity to obtain either a Master’s degree or a Doctorate
  • Finally, teaching has never been a separate issue to the Geophysics Engineering graduate.
