The objective of the degree in Biochemistry is to form professionals able to implement, supervise and lead activities to solve problems related to food, fermentations and biological products, as well as being able to design products and technologies in the same areas.​​

Candidate’s Profile

The candidate must have solid training in basic sciences as Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Maths. The candidate should be willing to become involved in the field of biological sciences such as biochemistry, microbiology, food biochemistry, industrial microbiology, among others. The candidate must show empathy to learn about a variety of human, technological and engineering aspects that will be part of their future professional activity such as:

  • Know how industrial equipment works and should be operated in order to achieve an integral process.
  • Know how to manufacture a diversity of products and how they can be improved and innovated.
  • Know how to interact with staff in order to be an active part of the community.
  • Know how to work ethically, sociably, environmentally in public and private food and biotechnological organizations. It is essential that the candidate be active, with an entrepreneurial spirit, besides having English and computational knowledge.

Graduate´s profile

The graduate will be able to perform collaborative, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary work in order to operate, keep, improve, optimize, select, adapt, design, develop, innovate, and assimilate the diverse components of a productive organization such as products, processes, operational techniques, equipment, quality systems, merchandising systems and anti-pollutant systems in the food and biotechnological areas; integrating human resources in an ethical, social and ecological sense while integrating human resources to the proper functioning of the industrial plant.

Work Field

General Information Biochemical engineers graduating from our school are nowadays working in national and international enterprises as well as in public institutions, holding various executive positions. They are also likely to do so in the future.

Food area Biochemical engineers hold positions in the dairy, meat, fruit and vegetables and cereal industries where a diversity of foods such as milk, cheese, cream, yogurt, ham, sausages, canned fruit, canned juice and nectars, jams, bread, flour, breakfast cereal, cookies, candy, ice-cream, soda, wine, beer, snacks, coffee and tea, besides their ingredients and additives are produced.

Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical area Graduates hold positions in companies that use microorganisms to elaborate products such as antibiotics, enzymes, vitamins, amino acids, organic acids, antigens, antibodies, hormones, vaccinations and intermediate and finished pharmaceutical products (raw active substances or finished drug).

Other working fields: Graduates work in the public and private service industry such as investigation centres, educational institutions, in the specialized technical sales sector (selling sophisticated equipment to measure and analyse industrial equipment for processes and ingredients or additives for the food and biotechnological industry), besides working in the normalization, regulation and supervision of governmental and non-governmental organizations.
