Bachelor’s Degree in Optometry


The Bachelor’s degree in Optometry aims at the training of professionals capable of preventing, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate alterations of the visual system and its associated structures, as well as monitor systemic illnesses that can impact the visual function.

Academic Requirements

Comply in a timely manner with each of the stages of the admission process highlighted in the call for entry to the university system at IPN and show documents such as:

  • High school Certificate
  • Secondary School Certificate
  • Unique Code of Population Registration (CURP)
  • Birth certificate
  • Pass the entry examination
  • 6 credential photographs

Candidates who studied high school in other states around the Mexican Republic must validate their diploma before the government of the state where they finished their studies (except for federal High schools).

Candidates who studied high school abroad must validate their diploma before SEP and present the pertinent translation by an expert.

Candidates who studied junior high school at UNAM, UNAM-incorporated schools, or abroad must present the equivalent diploma issued by SEP and the pertinent translation of it by an expert.

Foreign candidates must present the pertinent translation by an expert and FM9 Immigration form.

Obverse and reverse of every document is to be photocopied on one single sheet.

Original documents will not be accepted damaged, torn, forged, altered, stained or incomplete nor incomplete illegible photocopies.

Work Field

The Optometrist is a highly trained professional in the health area that can value the normal and abnormal conditions in the human visual system at different stages in life.

In order to achieve optimum performance it is necessary to carry out detection and diagnosis procedures in order to

  • Certify the health conditions of the visual system, give advice on risk factors through prevention and education campaigns in the community
  • Know the problems to be treated, making wise decisions
  • Forward problems beyond the personal competence to other professionals in order to work as an interdisciplinary team
