IPN students Eduardo Hernández Vergara and José Ángel Rojas Cruz worked for a year on a multidisciplinary project at the Artificial Life and Robotics Laboratory (ALIROB), led by Dr. Genaro Juárez Martínez from ESCOM. The project involved building and programming a robot capable of reaching a destination while constructing its route.
The autonomous navigation system was made possible through the development of an algorithm inspired by the dynamics of Physarum polycephalum, a microscopic slime mold that explores its environment and traces paths in search of nutrients.
These young Polytechnic students, the only Latin American undergraduate representatives, presented their bioalgorithm advancements at the 15th International Workshop on Networks, Computing, Systems, and Software, held in Okinawa, Japan, last November as part of the 22nd International Symposium on Computing and Networking (CANDAR) 2024.
