IWECS 2023: Energy Transition

Jorge de Luna

For three days, with the participation of Mexican and international experts, the twelfth edition of the International Workshop on Energy Conversion and Storage (IWECS) 2023 took place from October 18 to 20 at the Centro de Investigación en Ciencia Aplicada y Tecnología Avanzada (CICATA), Legaria Unit of the IPN.

IWECS 2023 is a prestigious forum where professionals from around the world exchange experiences and study trends in the energy sector, focusing on how to convert and store energy, one of the most important areas of opportunity for the future of human activities.

Aidé Minerva Torres Huerta, the Director of Research at IPN, and Isaias Miranda Viramontes, the Director of CICATA, inaugurated the workshops, which were broadcasted via streaming and in-person for doctoral students.

Miranda Viramontes stated, "Everything is energy, and it is neither created nor destroyed, only transformed." He explained that the National Energy Conversion and Storage Laboratory (Lancae) is the ideal place to explore various ways to maximize energy from different sources.

He added that Lancae is not just equipment and infrastructure, but a community made up of researchers, students, and support staff whose main goal is to find innovative ways to store energy with the purpose of releasing and using it to meet changing human needs.

During the simultaneous broadcast, which was attended by more than 100 virtual participants, eight speakers from IPN, UNAM, the National Institute of Clean Energies, Benemérita Universidad de Puebla, the Center for Technological Development in Electrochemistry, and UANL delivered presentations. Additionally, two international researchers from the University of Bologna, Italy, and Bilkent University, Turkey, made appearances.

Dr. Torres Huerta thanked the energy sector professionals and emphasized that ‘Técnica al Servicio de la Patria’is now in service of the world" and declared the event officially inaugurated.

Challenges in México

On the first day, the discussion was opened by Néstor Lorenzo Díaz, a professor at the Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria de Energía y Movilidad (UPIEM) of IPN. He pointed out the most relevant things that need to be known, including why energy storage has been chosen as the central theme.

He explained that the driver for this was climate change, which, since 2012, initiated the topic of energy transition and the development of a program with a series of solutions to transition from fossil fuels to green or renewable energies, which requires "energy storage as a central issue."

Regarding the topic of "Development of Redox Flow Batteries based on Organic Compounds," a presentation delivered by Dr. Mario Román Díaz Guillén on the second day of IWECS 2023, he discussed the technologies under development, their commercial applications for batteries, and their development and scaling.

"At INEEL (National Institute of Electricity and Clean Energies), clean energies are being developed in Mexico, and they have their own technology, such as the electrodialysis redox flow battery and redox flow batteries."
