The Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) has been awarded first place in the public sector category of the "Most Innovative" classification by the content-generating company Netmedia. This distinction has been presented for over two decades to recognize innovation in the use of information technology in projects with technological solutions.
According to Netmedia, the purpose of this recognition is to promote the use of information technology in processes, services, and products of all types of organizations, both public and private, in order to enhance their productivity and, consequently, the competitive position of the Mexican economy.
In the 23rd edition of the awards, IPN secured the top position among 50 applicants with its project: "Lagarto IPN: Development of Open ISA Processors and Open SO," a collaboration between scientists from the Center for Computing Research (CIC) at IPN, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, and the National Supercomputing Center of Barcelona (BSC). Together, they created Spain's first open-source microprocessor.
Arturo Reyes Sandoval, the General Director of IPN, expressed his gratitude for receiving this recognition for the second time as the most innovative public institution. The award was granted following a rigorous evaluation conducted by a judging committee consisting of industry IT leaders.
"It is an honor to receive this recognition, which contributes to enhancing our reputation and encourages us to continue working towards technological innovation for the benefit of society," said Reyes Sandoval.
He also mentioned that last year, the university was recognized for developing and implementing the online admission exam for Middle Highschool education.
"With the Lagarto IPN project, we will nurture the talent required by the semiconductor industry through a double-degree postgraduate program with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. In collaboration with the National Council of Humanities, Sciences, and Technologies (Conahcyt), we analyzed the opportunity to educate technologists in Mexico with a postgraduate program in semiconductor technology, which will be added to IPN's educational offerings as its first postgraduate program, including master's and doctoral degrees in Semiconductor Design, starting in February 2024."
Mónica Mistretta Ochoa, the Director of Netmedia, emphasized that with this winning project, Mexico is poised to fully develop its information technology industry.
"This marks the first time in 23 years that an organization has won the first-place award for two consecutive years in the annual IT industry ranking."
Representatives from IPN present at the ceremony included: Yessica Gasca Castillo, Secretary of Innovation and Social Integration; Ana Lilia Coria Páez, Secretary of Research and Postgraduate Studies; Leonardo Rafael Sánchez Ferreiro, General Coordinator of the National Calculation Center; and Francisco Hiram Calvo Castro, Director of the Center for Computing Research.
