AMLO Ratifies Arturo Reyes and Approves His Leadership at IPN

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has confirmed Dr. Arturo Reyes Sandoval for a second term (2023-2026) as the General Director of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN). At the same time, he assured that he holds a "positive opinion of his work" leading this educational institution, which is being renewed with specialized human resources, new academic programs, and units to face global challenges and contribute to the major infrastructure projects that will transform Mexico.

During a press conference at the National Palace, the Head of the Federal Executive informed the Mexican people that he has already signed the appointment of Reyes Sandoval, who previously served as a researcher and professor at the University of Oxford.

In response, Reyes Sandoval thanked the President for his reappointment, expressing pride in leading such a significant institution as the Politécnico. He pledged to continue working as a team to contribute with technologists and innovation to the federal government's central projects, such as the Maya Train and the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

He acknowledged that during the first three years of his administration at the IPN, important initiatives have been realized, advancing the institution in various fields. He also explained that there are significant upcoming projects that will contribute to strengthening the comprehensive education offered to polytechnic students.

"We have worked extensively in recent years to improve the infrastructure of the IPN by building schools and creating new research centers. In the next three years, we will enhance sports facilities by constructing an Olympic Gymnasium to support all disciplines, in addition to building a tennis stadium," he emphasized.

World-Recognized Scientist

Dr. Reyes Sandoval was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and raised in Teziutlán, Puebla, is a globally recognized scientist for his involvement in the development of the AstraZeneca vaccine at the University of Oxford to address the COVID-19 health emergency.

Dr. Reyes Sandoval exemplifies a culture of effort. His academic background is distinguished by excellence and high performance. He studied Bacteriologist Parasitologist Chemistry, a master's in Cytopathology, and a doctorate in Molecular Biomedicine at the el Instituto Politécnico Nacional. He has conducted a significant portion of his scientific activity at the University of Oxford, collaborating with research teams considered benchmarks in Europe.

Path to Internationalization

Under Dr. Reyes Sandoval's leadership, the Politécnico has taken significant steps toward internationalization by increasing the number of stays, visits, and academic exchanges with the world's most prestigious international universities.

Researchers play a fundamental role in the internationalization experience, shaping themselves as global citizens while contributing to Mexico's scientific growth.

According to the QS Graduate Employability Rankings, the Politécnico is among the top public Higher Education Institutions globally, with graduates well-regarded by their employers.

This reflects the strength of academic training, research competencies, and contributions to productive and social sectors made by the Politécnico.

IPN in Major National Projects

scientific and technological education in Mexico, the institution has been involved in major infrastructure projects that will transform the country.

The construction of the Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria de Ingeniería Campus Palenque (UPIIP) has begun to meet the need for specialized human resources for the Maya Train and to boost the economic and social development of the southern-southeastern region.

The academic project of the Centro de Estudios Científicos y Tecnológicos (CECyT) 19 "Leona Vicario" has also been consolidated to meet the requirements of the "Felipe Ángeles" International Airport in the State of Mexico. In collaboration with the Government of Puebla and with the support of the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP), the IPN is promoting the creation of the Centro de Innovación e Integración de Tecnologías Avanzadas (CIITA), Puebla Unit.

There is also an initiative to build a CECyT and a Professional Unit in that state. Additionally, the Politécnico is developing 12 scientific and technological research projects to strengthen the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

Scientific Strength of Mexico

The Politécnico has established itself as the second scientific force in Mexico. To train the new generations of scientists and technologists, the IPN has put into operation the National Laboratory of Vaccinology and Tropical Viruses (LNVyVT).

It is equipped with the necessary technology and infrastructure to articulate research projects and develop modern vaccines against tropical diseases. This effort will be accompanied by the world's first graduate program in vaccinology of its kind.
