As essential tools for the immediate future, open-source microprocessors represent a collaborative effort among developers for the design and manufacturing of these devices.
At the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), scientists from the Centro de Investigación en Computación (CIC) collaborated with developers from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) to bring to fruition the Lagarto IPN project: Development of OPEN ISA processors and OPEN Source operating systems.
This marks the first open-source microprocessor in Spain and positions Mexico as a potential player in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. The IPN achieved this recognition after producing the Lagarto I Processor Chip, a 64-bit RISC V processor, leading to the institute being awarded the top spot in the "Most Innovative" category by the Mexican technology company Netmedia on November 7. Netmedia has been recognizing organizations and institutions that generate innovation since the year 2000.
In the 23rd edition of these awards, the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, for the second consecutive year, solidified its position as the only institution from both the public and private sectors, out of 50 candidates, to win continuously. In 2022, the institute was awarded for the development and implementation of the online admission examination system for upper secondary education, achieving a registration rate of over 20 percent.
"The Most Innovative" Trophy
During the award ceremony in the Ex-Directors' Hall of the General Directorate of the Institute, the General Director, Arturo Reyes Sandoval, received the "Most Innovative" trophy from businesswoman and Netmedia director, Mónica Mistretta Ochoa.
Reyes Sandoval expressed gratitude for the recognition, marking the second time that the IPN has been acknowledged as the most innovative public institution. The acknowledgment comes after a rigorous analysis conducted by an evaluation committee consisting of IT industry leaders through a transparent process.
"It is an honor to receive this recognition, contributing to enhancing our prestige and motivating us to continue working towards technological innovation for the benefit of society."
Mistretta Ochoa noted that with this winning project, Mexico is positioning itself to fully develop the information technology industry.
"For the first time in 23 years, an organization has won the first-place award for two consecutive years in the annual IT industry ranking."
Present at the ceremony were the Secretary of Innovation and Social Integration, Yessica Gasca Castillo; the Secretary of Research and Postgraduate Studies, Ana Lilia Coria Páez; the General Coordinator of the National Computing Center, Leonardo Rafael Sánchez Ferreiro, and the Director of the Center for Research in Computing, Francisco Hiram Calvo Castro."
