The Instituto Politécnico Nacional carries out actions to consolidate scientific and technological research with social impact and that provides innovative solutions to problems that affect the population, through the training of human resources with academic excellence, said the director general of this house of studies, Arturo Reyes Sandoval.
During the Award Ceremony for members of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SIN), the Premio a la Investigación y Premio a la Divulgación del Instituto Politécnico Nacional 2022, Reyes Sandoval indicated that the results of the polytechnic scientific projects contribute substantially to the generation of frontier knowledge and technological development for the benefit of the country.
For this reason, he said, the IPN promotes the Researchers' Stimulus Program (EDI), which increased by 5.5 percent in teachers with respect to 2021. Likewise, the training of new scientists at the upper secondary, higher, and postgraduate levels was encouraged with the awarding of 5,200 scholarships from the Institutional Program for the Training of Researchers (PIFI).
Mr. Reyes Sandoval added that this year, 2,62 scientific research, technological development and innovation projects were developed at the Polytechnic, under internal and external financing schemes, mainly in the areas of engineering and technology, natural sciences, medicine, agriculture, social sciences, humanities, and education.
In addition, the budget allocated to the development of institutional research projects increased by 35 percent, and by 2023 a 40 percent increase is planned to expand the offer of calls for proposals and support for this sector.
The general director of the Polytechnic said that from 2021 to 2022 the number of professors belonging to the SNI of the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt) grew six percent, to 1,424 researchers, and it is expected that by next year the presence of polytechnics in the organization will reach 10 percent, to 1,578.
"For the institute it is a priority to work on the consolidation of research, excellence in the generation and transmission of knowledge in the scientific, humanistic, technological development and innovation areas; it goes hand in hand with the training of quality human resources, who, in turn, contribute to the solution of problems that affect society, as well as to the progress of the economy."
As part of these actions, he highlighted, for the first time in the history of the IPN, this year Conacyt awarded the distinction of Emeritus Researcher of the SNI to 14 scientists from the polytechnic community.
Reyes Sandoval reiterated the commitment to strengthen IPN's infrastructure to carry out quality research in excellent conditions, as well as to generate incentives to teachers for the development of research with a social, scientific, humanistic, technological, or innovative approach under the principles of equality and sustainability.
The Secretary for Research and Graduate Studies, Laura Arreola Mendoza, pointed out that the IPN will promote research collaboration with other national and international higher education and graduate institutions to address community problems and promote the development of public policies, among others.
Technological development projects with the potential to transfer and license knowledge and technologies in accordance with the needs of society and industry will also be supported.
At the event, the Research Award 2022 was granted to Miguel Gabriel Villarreal Cervantes, in the Basic Research category; to Issis Claudette Romero Ibarra, in Applied Research; to Mireya Saraí García Vázquez, in Technological Development; to Mariana Felisa Ballesteros Escamilla and David Cruz Ortiz, both in the category of Research Developed by Young Researchers.
Likewise, the National Polytechnic Institute 2022 Dissemination Award in the audio and audiovisual categories was presented to Osvaldo Israel Zúñiga Rodríguez and Obed Pardo Santos, respectively, and honorable mention in the audiovisual category to Jorge Adalberto Huerta Ruelas.
