Ciclopista, beyond recreation

Ciclopista, beyond recreation

Reopened last December, the Ciclopista at the "Adolfo López Mateos" Professional Unit in Zacatenco has become a benchmark not only for sports and cardiovascular conditioning but also as an open space for healthy recreation and nature contact along its 3.2 kilometers.

Cyclists who visit the path register an average speed between 12 and 15 kilometers per hour, as the speed should not exceed 25 km/h. This facility, a pride of the Polytechnic, has a total of 100 medium-range bicycles, 50 for men and 50 for women.

Like professional cycling paths, this one features usage signs and safety measures. On average, approximately 2,000 users visit monthly to exercise and/or relax.

Edgar Acosta García, head of the Polytechnic's Department of Operation and Control of Sports Facilities, explained that a group of specialists is currently working on a training model for high-performance athletes in various disciplines. He elaborated that training on the cycling path will focus on measuring resistance, strength, and physical conditioning.

"Most sports disciplines need to strengthen cardio work, and what better way to do it than on the cycling path surface, which, although not for racing, is a recreational and leisure track," he emphasized.

Requirements

Bicycles and helmets can be requested by presenting a valid IPN credential; they are exclusively for use by IPN members. External users can access the facilities with their valid voter ID but must bring their bicycles.

The schedule is Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM and from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM, except Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Leonardo Uriel Sánchez, a third-semester student of Environmental Systems Engineering at the National School of Biological Sciences, Zacatenco Unit, shared that he visits the cycling path at least twice a week and rides it three times during his stay. He mentioned that what he appreciates most is the journey. "Along the way, you encounter squirrels, and birds, and enjoy the weather."

He described that he pedals at a moderate speed from start to finish. He noted that some cyclists stop in front of the burro stable and take selfies for memories. Finally, the student urged the student community to use the bicycles responsibly, avoid damaging the facilities, and take advantage of them for healthy relaxation.
