Petroleum Engineering

Objective

To provide students with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to develop with efficiency, effectiveness, quality and economy the inherent activities in the different processes involved in the exploitation of hydrocarbons, water and geothermal energy (drilling, production, oil fields and well services) which are essential resources for the development of the country.

Candidate’s Profile

In general, students in Petroleum Engineering degree at the National Polytechnic Institute must have the basic knowledge and skills from the previous level, this in order to guarantee an adequate performance. They must also display the attitudes and values necessary for the realization of their training process and take an active and frontal position in their studies and the development of the required projects and work, while remaining in accordance with the ideology and principles of the institution.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge allowing the understanding of the logic of construction of basic disciplines, their concepts and the interrelationship with other disciplines.
  • High school knowledge preferably in the branch of Engineering and Physical- Math Sciences.

Graduate´s profile

The graduate has a comprehensive education in basic and engineering sciences that applies to the solution of problems through the management of systems and computer media, simulation and process control, material technology elements, energy savings and the skills needed to develop new products and processes; enriched with foreign language mastery that allow it to adapt to the globalized environment.

The graduate shows leadership skills, organizational capacity, integration and analysis of information, ability to adapt to changing situations, strategic thinking, entrepreneurship, analytical and teamwork skills, communicability and values, among the most important tolerance, honesty and responsibility.

The physical and chemical properties and standards that govern the methodologies of analysis of the characterization and valuation of crude oil, natural gas and its derivatives.

  • Associate and apply the principles, theories and laws of phenomena related to transportation and physical and chemical transformations of oil and natural gas for industrial use.
  • Apply the fundamentals of chemical petroleum engineering in the solution of problems in the analysis, design and control of industrial equipment in the microeconomics reference framework.
  • Plan, analyse, design, operate, direct and maintain storage, distribution and transformation systems for crude oil and gas.
  • Use properly the computer packages for the statistical treatment of analytical, process and interpretation data.
  • Establish methodologies and procedures for sampling of process currents.
  • Use tables and databases of properties of crude oil, natural gas and their derivatives.
  • Use rules and procedures for the quality control of inputs and products.
  • Manage standards and procedures for the control of contaminants of process plants.
  • Implement and monitor the safety and hygiene measures, operational risk prevention, contingency management and waste control.
  • Apply start-up, operation and shut-down procedures of the process plants and supervise the calibration and maintenance programs of the control instruments.
  • Use design codes, material selection and follow-up maintenance programs.
  • Program and supervise the procedures of inspection and safety for the prevention of accidents in equipment of process, transport, distribution and storage.
  • Schedule and supervise the wear evaluation examinations of the equipment to guarantee its operation.
  • Implement standards, verify the quality procedures of production processes, and promote certification and maintenance of quality systems.
  • Model, simulate and optimize equipment and process plants by using a computational tool.
  • Apply theoretical, economic and administrative fundamentals to the development of project engineering.
  • Use the refining technologies for crude oil, natural gas and petrochemical derivatives.

Work Field

The field of professional practice for Petroleum Engineering graduates are companies and institutions such as PEMEX, Mexican Institute of Petroleum, Federal Commission of Electricity, Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, suppliers and service companies of the oil industry. The investments made in 2002 by Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) strongly impacted the demand for oil engineers, as both the oil industry and the Mexican Oil Institute and the supply and service companies offered multiple positions and even though all the graduates were hired, the job offer continued, which is an indication that only part of the demand was covered.
